PYY (peptide YY) is a hormone produced by the gastrointestinal tract that regulates appetite and food intake. PYY is released from the enteroendocrine cells of the small intestine in response to the presence of nutrients. PYY levels in the blood are highest after meals and lowest during fasting, and are influenced by factors such as macronutrient composition and gastric emptying rate. In health PYY levels are assicated with slowed gastric emptying but it’s value in assessing critical illness related delayed gastric emptying is yet to be determined.
